Ahalanui Park
Only 12 minutes away from the Cottage. Geothermaly heated spring fed pond.
Kaimu Beach
Only 5 minutes away from cottage. New forming beach at Kaimu (not advisable to swim)
Isaac Hale / Pohoiki Beach Park
15 Minute drive to a great surfing, swiming and when the lava is flowing into the ocean...This is where the lava tour boat rides launch from.
Green Mountain / Green Lake
15 Minutes from Cottage, This fresh water lake situated inside a cinder cone crater is on private land. You must call the day before to receive permission from owner. Awesome place to swim.
Lava Boat Tours
Get as close as you can to witness Pele in action. Lava Boat Tours launching from Pohoiki, only a 12 min. drive from the cottage.
Akaka Falls
Located north of Hilo. The highest water fall on the Big Island of Hawaii, about 45 mins away.
Kalapana Village Cafe
Only 5 minutes from the Cottage. Open 7 days a week, serving breakfast lunch and dinner. After you can get a cup of Kava or Awa from Uncle Roberts Kava Bar next door. Lava Walk Tours also avaialble! You also can find a small corner store here as well.
Waipio Valley
Beautiful, hike, horseback and day tours avaialble, only 50 minutes away!
Kalani
We are only minutes away from Kalani Oceanside Retreat that offers, Yoga, Gift Shop and restaurant. Oltmpic size Pool and Sauna (fee).
Lava Viewing Area
Kalapana Lava Viewing Area. Only a 6 minute drive away, watch Pele make new land. Open from 2-10 pm daily (Last car in at 8:00pm). Wear good hiking shoes, bring a flashlight and water. Only a 6 minute drive from the cottage!
Mauna Kea Summit
Drive up and see the Mauna Kea Summit, about an hour away, 14000 ft elevation, it snows in the winter time, but access year round with a great scenery! Only a 1 hour dive from the cottage.
Volcano National Park
The park is only a 45 min. drive from the Cottage. Visit the Crater, Museum, Thurston Lava Tube, Hiking and steam vents.
Star of the Sea
The Star of Sea Painted Church, located just a few minutes away from the Cottage by Kalapana, images of Saint Damien, it was moved during the Lava flow from Kalapana in 1993.
Pahoa
Pahoa Town, just a short 15 minute drive, great restaurants, live music, shoping, bars, groceries, banks, post office, sushi, natural foods store and more! The Makuu Farmers Market is opn on Sundays from 8-2. Crafts produce, live music Ono foods and more. Just a 15 minute drive from the cottage.
Cape Kumakahi
The most Eastern point in Hawaii the Tidal Ponds at the Kumukahi Light House area, only a 20 min drive from the cottage, great for sunbathing, wave watching and fishing!
Botanical Gardens
The Botanical Gardens, located right outside Hilo, a beautiful self guided tour to see 3 waterfalls and a wide variety of exotic flowers. This is a must if you want to see examples of tropical paradise on the East Side of the Big Island, only 40 minutes away from the cottage!
Merrie Monarch Festival
The Merrie Monarch Festival, held every year in Hilo, it is a celebration of the Hawaiian tradition of Hula! A week long event in the Spring with parades, crafts, free shows and competition!
Hilo
Hilo Town, is great place for shopping, malls, dining, rental cars, airport, farmers market, museaum's, Mac Nut Factories, Big Island Canides Factory, Zoos, Kayaking, sailing, Bayfront shopping and live enternainment and so more! Only 45 minutes from the cottage.
