The island of Penang, also known as the pearle of the orient.
Penang is an island with a wide variety of landscapes and things to do. Penang has a lovely climate, a beach and an untouched jungle. The roads are well maintained and there are lots of things for sale for example Potatos, peanutbutter and many other European products. Do you prefer to eat out? Well, then you will be spoiled for choice with a large varity of cheap or expensive restaurants.
On Penang you will find the town of Georgetown which has lots of shops and places of interest. One of the best and fun ways to discover Georgetown is by bicycle taxi. The driver will tell you with pride all there is to know about his town. You will be driving through Chinatown, Little India and you will visit one of the beautiful tempels.
We also recommend a trip to Penanghill, where you will have a lovely panoramic view of the island and you can also see the mainland of Malaysia.
From Penang you can also go on a trip to for example the cooler regions like Cameron Highlands. Or you can go on a boat trip which takes 2 1/2 hours and will take you to the island of Langkawi with its beautiful beaches. It is also possible to make a city trip to Kuala Lumpur from Penang. The best way to travel is by plane with Airasia ( the cheapest ) and this will only take you 45 minutes.
Penang is a lovely island to escape the cold winter months. It is least effected by the tsunami and ready and able to receive guests.

The Batu Ferringhi area
Batu Ferringhi is the place where the exciting life of the Pasar Malam takes place. Batu Ferringhi used to be a small fisherman village. You can still see the remains of it when you turn towards the see just after the Park Royal Hotel. Here you can still find the houses of the original inhabitants of Batu Ferringhi . There are also several small restaurants, where you can eat in the evening. Many people go for trips on the island, as Penang is an island where there is always something to do and no chance of getting bored. There are plenty of opportunities to do aquatic sports. You can rent a catamaran, surfboard or jetski (jetski from 15 minutes onwards) etcetera. You can also go parasailing or make a banana boat ride. Boats sail to for instance Monkey Island (no island, but a beach) where it is possible to snorkel. Another possibility is to book an excursion to Pula Payer (just over an hour by boat), where you can snorkel amongst the Coral Reef and feed small sharks. Anyone who does not feel like going on an excursion, there is plenty to do along the beach.
In the evening there are many stalls along the roads where you can buy anything you want. For example bags, watches, cd´s, dvd´s, clothes, suitcases and all kinds of souvenirs. You can have dinner at any of the many restaurant available. For instance House of Kampong, Deep Sea, The Last Drop or the hawker centre Global Bay and Long Beach Cafe. At the hawker centre you can choose from European, Indian or Chinese food. A great meal for four persons including drinks will cost you about RM 50. A small beer at the hawker centre costs RM 7 and a large (750 ml) RM 12. For a wide selection of European foods it is best to go to The Ship. In this replica of a galleon they serve an excellent steak. At the fish restaurant Eden, they serve the best fish dishes. During the weekend the restaurant is very busy with people from Georgetown. A taxi ride to town will cost you about RM 35 and a bus RM 2. The bus is a lot cheaper and more fun, but a taxi will get you there quicker.
