Community AmenitiesThe history of Acapulco is older than you would think. Did you know that from 1565 till 1815, Acapulco was the destination for the Manila Galleon? These galleons carried spices, porcelain, ivory and lacquerware from China and Southeast Asia via the then Spanish controlled Philippines in exchanged for New World silver. The goods then crossed Mexico overland for shipment to Spain from the port of Veracruz. After a decline in the early XVIII century, Acapulco's fine natural harbor began to turn its fortunes around. After 1850, Acapulco became a stopover for a flotilla of steamships, filled with San Francisco bound gold-rush adventurers. At the turn of the century, Acapulco began its adventure as a resort destination. During the 1940's the Mexican President fell in love with Acapulco and thought that everyone else should have the same opportunity. By the 1950's, investments had made Acapulco as the beach destination of choice in Mexico. Movies stars such as Elvis Presley and Lana Turner began coming, staying for weeks, and buying homes. Now Placido Domingo, Ricky Martin and other stars have residences in this dynamic resort. Over the last 10 years, major investments were made to modernize the infrastructure and expand the services required to accommodate tourism. With the highway to Mexico City, Acapulco has become a location for week-end retreats for stressed city dwellers looking for an opportunity to refresh themselves.
