Neighborhood overview

If you're looking for a "different and authentic" vacation experience, Casa Paxanax is your perfect option. Located on the shores of famous Lake Atitlan. Santa Cruz is an authentic Mayan village, which is situated at the top of the hill, from where the house is located. Feel free and safe to walk around. If you are interested in Mayan culture, this is a must! There are several nearby bars/restaurants within walking distance to connect with other fellow travelers.

Getting around

In the village, get around by walking to any of the nearby restaurants/bars or retreat centers. Santa Cruz is a 15 minute boat-ride away from the main town of Panajachel, but situated close to several bars and restaurants for easy access to entertainment and meeting other fellow travelers. Otherwise, you can always take a boat to one of the nearby villages to explore the lake!

Other things to note

• The home is located a short boat ride away from Panajachel. The public boats run daily, leaving every half an hour from 6am to 6:30 pm (cost is 10-15Q ($1.50-$2.00 per person).
• We can also arrange a private boat for you from Pana, (cost around $25)
• You will need to park your car in Panajachel, by the dock Kayucos Marina private packing. The cost is Q75/night.
• Shuttle service or Uber is also another way to arrive from Antigua, Xela or the City. We can help you organize your shuttle.

Property Amenities

Situated on the shores of the world-famous Lake Atitlan (5,100ft/1,555m), Casa Paxanax provides privacy and tranquility, along with unsurpassable views across to the lake's three sentinel volcanoes. This lake-side property is on the small bay and community of Paxanax, nestled below the Mayan village of Santa Cruz on the north side of Lake Atitlan.

From the shore a pretty path winds up a colorful and lush garden, to a charming two-story home with a large, covered terrace. The cozy open-plan living area and kitchen lead to a bathroom (with bath tub) and two single bedrooms. Via exterior stairs the master bedroom is accessed, and has an uninterrupted, tree-top view of the lake.

The large terrace, which doubles as an eating/recreational area, greatly enlarges the atmospheric property. It is the perfect spot for a family meal or to just laze in the hammock with a good book and soak up the atmosphere.

The garden is full of local fruit where you can pick your own bananas, papayas and lemons. Or else fresh fruit and vegetables are readily available at the daily market in Panajachel (Pana). There also a couple of good supermarkets offering all other groceries.

The house also offers a private dock to sunbathe on, or take long cool swims in the calm morning.

Accessible only by boat, it is just a 7 min lancha ride to the main hub of the lake Panajachel. Public lancha go back and forth every half hour or hour.

LAKE ATITLAN
Lake Atitlan provides a multitude of interesting day trips to other Mayan villages around the lake e.g. Santiago Atitlan, Santa Catarina, San Antonio, San Pedro and San Marcos, as well as more adventurous activities like paragliding and kayaking. For those who wish to indulge and pamper themselves, the nearby Villa Sumaya boutique hotel offers yoga classes, massages and various therapies.
Although Aldous Huxley's comment that Lake Atitlan is the “most beautiful lake in the world”, is in fact a misquote, it would be hard to dispute this statement.

His actually words were: “It is really too much of a good thing.' Come and judge for yourself, and see where nature and Mayan culture collide, creating an unforgettable experience.
